Michels may support abolishing the Department of Public Instruction, said additional funding for public schools was the “definition of insanity”
MADISON, Wis. — Today, Governor Tony Evers’ campaign announced a new ad highlighting Tim Michels’ radical positions opposing Wisconsin’s public schools. While Gov. Evers has been a champion for public education, Michels has supported dangerous ideas that will leave parents, teachers, and students without the resources they need to succeed.
Michels has made his position on public education clear. If he becomes governor, he won’t rule out abolishing the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. He said additional funding for public schools was the “definition of insanity,” and he would even consider slashing 40 percent of funding from Wisconsin’s public schools. Michels also supports a dangerous bill that would allow loaded guns on school grounds.
Having spent most of his career in education, Gov. Tony Evers knows the importance of strong public schools and has funded them at their highest level in nearly 20 years. After Wisconsin schools fell to 18th in the nation under the previous administration, they’re now in the top ten today according to U.S. News and World Report. In his next term, Gov. Evers will ask for an additional $2 billion for Wisconsin public schools.
